Quiet around here! I've got a tip.

Got my floors cleaned this morning, split pea soup is on the burner and sat down to sew. I'm working on a camp shirt for dh. I've got some really cool all cotton fabric and I'm using a pattern by Palmer and Pletsch from 1988, 4056. I've made many shirts from this pattern since 1988 for two husbands, a son and dd's boyfriend. Their patterns came and still come loaded with tips and I don't know why I never noticed this one that's so cool. I guess I just figured I knew how to use fusible interfacing but here's what they say to do: before applying the fusible to the shirt front put the interfacing and shirt front right sides together. Sew an 1/8th to a 1/4 inch seam joining them all the way down the front leaving the top open. Turn so the wrong sides are together and press with your iron fusing the interfacing to the fabric. Instantly you have a beautifully finished edge on the inside front facing.

Seems so basic and I'm guess many of you have been doing this for years. I guess I could have been had I bothered to read the directions more closely. Silly me........ :D

How neat is that! It would give a beautiful finish to the front for sure. I have always put my interfacing on the facing, not on the shirt, I'm thinking it would give a crisper front than what I get, wouldn't it?

Laura, I mis-typed. The fusible is still on the facing. It just finishes it off nicely. Sorry.

Don't forget to under stitch that seam!!
I've seen it done that way before and tried it a couple times. It gives a nice edge. I like that particular edge finished rather than serged.
That's how apply non fusible (usually either the same fabric or one or light weight cotton) since I rarely use fusible anymore.

So Dorothy, you just use some of the same fabric for interfacing so you have 3 layers of fabric down each front piece for buttons and buttonholes?

Yup, usually, in collars and on facing too.

Dorothy, I've been sewing for many years (like most of us!) and I never thought of using self-fabric for the interfacing. Since I need to make some work shirts in the near future, I'm going to try that. It does sound good, because sometimes I have an issue w/ shrinkage of the interfacing.

Thanks for the good tip!
