Headwrap/scarf ideas.

My youngest daughter had to have another shunt surgery last week. This time they shaved the hair up front right across the top of her head. Last time it was on the side so we just changed which side we parted her hair on and did a comb over. This time she will have to have some sort of wrap. I am envisioning something like a long rectangle that will work kind of like a headband. I have been googling for what dimensions to cut it but having no luck. I want something that will stay on with out having to be really tight and that won't be ruined by a little wound healing stuff (blood etc.). I'm gonna go dig around int he stash and play around a bit but if anyone has dimensions or ideas for how to cover her head with something pretty please share.

Gina, Measure with your tape measure. Around her forehead at the hairline down to the nape of her neck and then add enough to tie it comfortably. Let that be the diagonal line of a square , fold it in half , sew all around the rest leaving a place to turn it. Turn, the topstitch all the way around . (this will close the place where you turned it) That would make such an easy quick one that you cound make her several in just a few minutes. Or you could use 2 separate pieces and make them to be reversable so she had colors to go with her clothes.. I have some like that and then i have one that is quilted with batting right around the front part. and just the plain fabric on the ends that tie.

Would a "do rag work". It would give her a gypsie look. She could put on some hoop earings and feel very pretty.

Here are few sites for do rag caps which tie on - kind of cute. How old is your daughter? Perhaps she can start a trend. The following do rags give good coverage and can be tied to stay on but still be soft. The patterns usually give measurements

If you do a search for cancer caps there are a few sites with scarf wraps such as you describe. Unfortunately, I have cut and paste the patterns I have and didn't save the sites. That head wrap site JH notes is interesting. I love head wraps, particularly ethnic ones, not that I try them that often. A lot will depend upon your daughter's age and what peer group she is in. Regarding dressing: Cancer patients are recommended to cut a square of old TShirt to wear under hats, because their head is a little slick when hair is lost and it is softer under wigs. I would think that the same concept could be used to cover dressings or incisions under a scarf and if you have a few they would be easily washable and protect the scarf or wrap.

I found this patternand made one the adult size with the kid length for the elastic. I used flannel so it would be soft. She seemed to like it and wore it for school today. Bandannas and Doo Rags have been banned in most schools now because of gang usage. She still has all her long beautiful hair on the sides and the back and they left her some whispies up front that could pass for bangs if we cut them, but she just grew her bangs out so she could tuck them behind her ear. She is not eager to cut them.
I think I am going to use Libby's suggestion for how to make the wraps. Sounds like exactly what I was thinking. The problem is I sent the head to school today so now I have to wait for her to get home before I can sew any of those.
