Plan Challenge pants pattern

New postby ninifav on Tue Sep 25, 2007 10:07 pm

Okay, first, I rarely sew for myself except for easy skirts...HATE the fit and am lousy at figuring out how to get it right; but...
I would like to try some pants...Since I am of a certain "mature" age, I really like RTW that are flat in the front and some elastic in the back...Can anyone put me in the right direction for patterns?? In RTW, I usually wear a 8-10 petite...I think that this extrapolates to a size 16 in Patterns...How humbling is that?? Thanks...

Check out this thread: sewing with a plan challenge, I recently made a great pair of pants. Some of my co-workers think I bought them from Ann Taylor--but I really made them. :)

Hmm. It seems like there should be a pattern out there with the elastic only in the back. It seems to be so popular in RTW - if I'm not paying attention in a department store sometimes I accidentally pick up a pair with the elastic back to try on (I don't need that particular feature...yet ;) ). When I have a bit of time later I'll snoop around and see what I can find.

If you take out any back darts and, perhaps add a smidgen at the seams when you cut, you can add elastic. You can cut it the width of the waste band higher, put the waste band on the front and turn the back down over the waste band to make a casing in the back or you can put elastic in the back part of the waste band. Be sure you add a little length to the waste band in the back.

Kwik Sew 3340 seems like what you're looking for - what do you think?

They look like they have a nice fit to them Kaitlin - I might pick up that pattern myself. I haven't tackled a fly front yet but I guess there's got to be a first time.

If you get a Kwik Sew pattern it will walk you thru putting in a fly front zipper the easiest way I've ever seen. Don't fret over fly fronts, they are really easy.
