child's pageant dress

Help! I have a granddaughter who wants to be in a pageant. I can't go the rental or purchase route so I will have to try to make one myself. Anyone out there have any knowledge on making the cupcake skirt that they wish to share? I am finding that those who know, don't want to share the knowledge. Surely, this community isn't like that. Hoping for help, Kerry.

Don't even know what a cupcake skirt is. But I do know that if you don't hear from someone on this board it isn't because we don't want to share. We love to share! We used to have a couple of pageant dress sewers so hang tight someone may know what you are looking for.

can you give some links or something to show us what you mean by a cupcake dress... I also have no idea what that means but it gives me a craving for some cake!

Welcome, I have no idea what a cupcake dress is, and if the picture is what it is, I have no idea how to make it. If someone here does, I"m sure they'll do their best to share :D

I just did some searching. I found this site that sell the pattern to make one http://www.mypageantkid.com/home.html

That is the closest I can find for instructions. Hopefully someone else can help out!

When I used to work for a girls designer line at the trade shows here, the pageant dresses were Just sort of sheer and the skirts were 3 tiered and usually the last tier of the skirt was more than a full circle... They wore layered petticoats underneath.. The dresses were always trimmed with lots of gathered lace..The salesman I worked for represented Dorissa of Miami and she designed more tailored clothes, but we always looked at everything at the children's shows, when we worked..

I've never even attempted something like that but what it looks like to me from the picture is some stiff fishing line inserted in the hem to make it give that effect. I think Pam is the one to answer this question - I know she's done that in the past.

I lookes at My Pagent Kid web site and I think that is your best bet for what you want. Buuuuuut, If that is not what you want I suggest you go to the Nearest Hancocks and get a Kwik Sew skirted leatard pattern . and make a several layered skirt doing a rolled hem over stiff fishing line. I don't know how much of your own time you want to put into designing the dress but that is what I'd do. None of my grandchildren do pagents so I can't offer much more help than that. Do you have any of Wild Gingers software. Some of their forum members do costumes. If you have the software you will have access to the forums.

You may also try Jalie patterns, though they are from Quebec Canada and are kind of expensive, but they have the leotard and skating costumes which are kind of like that. Good luck ! It looks like a challenge!

Didn't we have a woman who made skating costumes and the like on SWN. Did she come over to SWU??

Interesting, I just opened up a bag of Barbie clothes I bought at a garage sale to give to my dd, there is a tiny Barbie "cupcake" dress in there! I looked at it closely and it does appear to have some sort of fishing line sewn into the hem.
