Pumpkin and sweet potato pie recipe anyone?

New postby fabric_addict on Mon Dec 10, 2007 11:14 pm

Hi. I've never made a pumpkin or sweet potato pie, but recently I had a wonderful pumpkin-sweet potato pie at a local restaurant. It was super and I'd like to find a good recipe that combines the two ingredients. I'd really like to make it as low-sugar as possible while also avoiding artificial ingredients.

Does anyone have a good recipe to share? Thanks!

When I make pumpkin pie, I just use the recipe on the can - it always turns out well. I wonder if the pumpkin/sweet potato pie would work if you just used the same recipe (or really any pumpkin pie recipe), but substituted half sweet potato (or the other way around, substituting pumpkin in a sweet potato pie recipe)? The basic ingredients look about the same between the two types, but there might be some variation in the spices.

The only difference in my 2 recipes are the words pumpkin and sweet potatoes.. Both have brown and white sugar, eggs , milk, and 2 & 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice.. and optional chopped pecans , of course..

OK. this may sound weird, but how about adding some carrot to the recipe? I know my grandmother used to add carrot to tomato sauce rather than putting in sugar. ...and I figured, hey carrots are orange and so are sweet potatoes and pumpkins. ;)

I posted a sweet potato pie recipe under Baking with Splenda. I imagine if you mixed the pumpkin filling and sweet potato filling it would be good. I know when I've made the sweet potato recipe, baking the potatoes til done generally makes them turn out very sweet so that very little sugar, if any, was required when making the filling. Make sure you rub the skins with oil and bake til very soft, then taste to see if the filling needs more sugar/splenda.

An extra treat is to use about 3 TBS of rum (or more to taste :D HIc, 'scuse me) in place of some of the liquid. Rum goes very well with the other flavours.

Thanks for the tips. I tried making several pies over the holidays. A couple with just sweet potato and one with sweet potato and pumpkin. They turned out a bit bland. I think I ended up with the wrong ratio of spices since the pre-made pie crusts were larger than the norm which meant that I had perhaps at least one extra cup of potato/pumpkin yet used the spices in amounts listed for a smaller pie.

I'll try making them again with more spices (or smaller crust) and perhaps I'll try the rum  ;)
