Laptop Died

New postby MartySews2 on Tue May 28, 2013 9:13 pm

Tonight, my laptop died. I will try to get it to the shop tomorrow. I did all of my troubleshooting but it still won't turn on. So frustrating!!!

That's too bad, Marty. At least you have extra computers around so it doesn't keep you offline for long. That's this whole new "cloud computing" thing I guess. The computer itself doesn't matter--just grab any computer--and all your photos, files, and documents are automatically available, pulled out of the cloud. At least that is how my nephew explained it when he installed it on my computer. He said I never have to worry about my computer again. Technology is amazing. I remember when computers took up entire rooms.

Does anyone else remember the phrase "Do not fold, spindle, or mutilate" from punch cards? I always wondered what "spindle" meant!

I don't have a cloud on my computer LOL!!! I'm not too worried about losing anything but I'm uncomfortable using my daughter's MacBook. I am thankful that she does share this with me. Other than email, sewing discussion groups and blogs, Facebook, photos, and keeping up with my Embroidery designs and Embroidery software, those the only things that I do on a computer. Probably as much as anyone else.

Miss Fleecy I was told that spindle is the long spike gizmo that you used to see(more years ago than I want to admit to) at some cash registers. They would put recipts, orders etc on this when done with them.
Marty hope you get your laptop up and running soon.

Brockie, I remember those! I never knew what they were called. Dangerous for hands, too. That makes a lot of sense--I don't think adding extra holes to punch cards would be a good idea!

Barb, I'm not sure. We always called it a spindle when we used them.

Talked with one of my church members who owns a computer business. He told me that with a broken hinge and the facing of the screen broken, it is unlikely that my laptop can be fixed as there are minuscule wires around the screen and in the hinges that operate the computer. :brick: When these are broken, then the computer will not work. Not the news that I wanted to hear, guess hubby and I will be going computer shopping. At least, my data can be retrieved so that is a bright spot.

I found that image by searching for "spindle file." That seems to be what they are called! Good memory, Brockie!

Sorry to hear about your computer, Marty, but it will be nice to have something new that (fingers crossed!) won't have as many problems! Too bad it broke before you could sell it though. I always sell my old computers when I get new ones, after my nephew erases all of my data. Apple computers don't depreciate in value all that much, so I buy a new one just as my warranty is ending, and then I can get most of the value of the old one back.

Hubby said that we would go computer shopping either tonight or tomorrow afternoon. Now to figure out what I want in a laptop and how much do I want to spend. Decisions, decisions.
