How does the heat from the gas burning get through the house. Most furnaces I am aware of need to have a fan to distribute the heat through ducts throughout the house. Ask me how I know - I have just been told I need a new furnace (natural gas) and that new Canadian government regulations require that all new furnaces have to be high efficiency - $5000+!
I will be getting a new thermostat with the furnace and I will get a programmable one. The actual thermostat that can be programmed does run on small household batteries, but it is connected electrically, through the wall to the furnace fan.
I live in a very long winter cold climate and when the electricity goes off, especially during the day (very short ones in winter) the first thing I notice, is the house gets cold and on go the sweaters and fireplace. If I have been out I know the electricity has been out as EVERY clock in the house is blinking and need to be reset. Last week the power went off at night when I was asleep. The blinking digital bedside clock woke me up. I thought it had a back up battery. Yes indeed it does, but I don't think I have even thought about replacing it since I purchased it!!

The furnaces have a large grate & enough BTU to heat several rooms. I have one in the hallway on the floor that heats the bedrooms & one in the living/dining area that heats the rest of the house. The one in the living room is pretty big. I keep the thermostat set on 70-75 degrees but can still get too hot. If chilled, I just go stand over the floor furnace with my legs straddled from side to side. The furnace grate is about 2-1/2 ft long & 18 inches wide. I'm not sure how it works. They were in the house when we bought it.

We got about 5" of snow here. Not quite as much as forecasted, but PLENTY. ;) First a layer of sleet, then several inches of snow, then more sleet. Now there's a fine drizzle again and a layer of crusty ice on top of the snow. It's going to be messy the next few days. It looks pretty right now, but I hope it thaws out in a day or two. All of the roads in our county, and most surrounding counties, are closed. Lots of wrecks on the interstates last night.
DH is going to grill steaks for supper. I'll cook baked potatoes and broccoli to go with it.

He is grilling them outside on the grill? How long will that take with your temps?

We had around 4 inches of snow & most of the streets are driveable. It will be a nightmare tomorrow when everything freezes over. Went to the cardiologist office this morning for my appt only to find the office closed. It took us about 40 minutes. One elderly couple had driven in from Newbern, TN (about 100 miles away) for their appt. Another elderly couple had driven in from a neighboring county (about 50 miles) for their appt too. They were very upset. It's so hard to get an appt with my cardiologist, it would have been nice if some type of notification had been sent out over the airwaves or an email. If they can call to remind you of an appt, they should be able to call to let you know that they are going to be closed. Major aggravation. From what I could tell on the drive out to the doctor, a lot of people were out shopping, eating out, & playing in the snow. A snowfall should never close down an entire city. It's ridiculous.

He's going to use the gas grill. It has a lid that closes, so it shouldn't take any longer than usual to cook steaks. It's right outside his workshop, so I'm sure he'll be going in and out to keep himself warm. He's been outside or in the shop most of the day.

Yep...I used to grill steaks, chops, etc. on the barbeque in the winter. But don't have a barbeque any longer. I do miss it esp. in the summer.

I love bbqing in the winter, makes the neighbours crazy! Marty, I can't believe that the cardiologist wasn't courteous enough to let his patients know! That is just plain rude. Even my specialist will call to let me know she needs to rebook or is not available. I'd complain about it. Especially being a specialist and people wait months for these appointments and have to drive a long ways to go to them.

Forecasting more snow, it's cold here, -1C which is cold for us. All the snow we got on the weekend is still there. We sat in the hottub again after work, it's murder on the skin, but so nice and warm to sit specially when it's cold and windy out, it's quite sheltered by the house and so nice.
