wrist surgery today

New postby sewingmom on Thu Jul 07, 2011 7:10 am

I am having left wrist/thumb surgery this morning and will be sent home after the surgery. The joint of the thumb that connects the thumb to the wrist will have the worn cartlege replaced with a piece of tendon. Please keep me in your prayers. Now I will find out how to sew with one hand and with a cast on the other hand. I've needed thtime off frome work to catch up on some things around home. Hope I can follow through wiht my plans. I have some books by Andy Andrews to read to wile away the hours I do not feel up to doing anything else.

That sounds something like the type of surgery I will need eventually. But when they do they won't be replacing a tendon but fusing my thumb to the joint at the wrist. Hope everything goes well...and that you adapt to sewing with the cast. At least wearing the cast will only be temporary and you will be able to use it eventually.

Praying that all goes well. It sounds like the tendon repair that I had a little over a year ago. I sewed with the cast even though it was awkward. I did manage to get out of cooking & washing dishes. Even now, at times, I wear my wrist brace.

Wishing you very good success and luck. In the long run you'll be glad you had the surgery I'm betting.

My DGS has gotten good at using his index & middle finger to replace his thumb. If you want it bad enough you can find a way! Marty his cast is waterproof so he can still get it wet.

surgery took a little over 2 hours. I have been sleeping a lot since I got back home. Th doctor didn't want do the surgery under a nerve block. We compromised on the anesthesia. They gave me some gas that put my head in a spin and then some IV sedative to put me the rest of the way out. I was ready to go home an 1.5 hrs after surgery. I am a bit nauseated so I can't take the pain meds right now. Surely do wish I could.
Judy I read about people getting the joints of the wrist fused. I hope there is another alternative for you when the time comes.

I'm doing better now. Lots of Ice on the cast helps. DGD Chloe is petting me a lot. She is an exceptional nurse for a 10 year old.
