I know I should........

Working with a new fabric can be intimidating - discuss everything from washing to needle choice here.

I know I should........

I know I should but do I have to prewash fleece.
I have two 3 yard pieces of fleece for a warm winter jacket. Prewashing is a bit of a pain here and I wondered if fleece needs to be prewashed. Does it shrink?? I have always prewashed it before just like everything else but if I don't have to, skipping that sounds good to me right now.

Wally took me to the store and bought me the fleece. I thought that was so sweet of him. Earlier in the summer I knitted the trim for a jacket and now it is getting to be time to put it together.

Aren't you proud of me, Jan?

I only prewash fleece to get off the store dirt & make sure it is colorfast.
If you don't wash & you then wash after adding trim if the color runs would you be upset?
if so I would at least rinse it to check for that.

I've never pre-washed fleece and I've sewn with a lot of it. I would skip it, Dorothy.

I can't tolerate the chemicals they put on the fabrics to keep them fresh looking, so that is my big argument for pre-washing.

It depends on the time crunch as to whether I pre-wash or not. Fleece is a polyester so it shouldn't shrink. However, if it was inexpensive (less than $10 a yard)I would pre-wash to see how bad it pills as cheaper fleece tends to pill a lot. That would make a big difference on how the garment will look when done.

I always buy the fleece that is 'anti-pill'. And no I do not pre-wash it. I have made a lot of garments in my years since fleece came out, and heard the other day that a sweat-shirt I made DS more than 4 years ago is still good-looking and he still wears a lot. Now I am to make their new pup a doggie coat to match it. LOL
