I got Keepsake Quilting catalog today and there is an Iron Shoe in there that you can order. I thought of this post when I saw it. :)

I purchased an iron shoe and used it about 10 years ago. I found that the iron shoe (teflon) used worked very well. BUT, when I decided to remove it for some reason or another I found the sole of my iron was very discoloured and a little rough. Using my usual method of cleaning my iron sole did not take any roughness away. I ended up purchasing another iron, which has a teflon finish. I still have the iron shoe, but won't put the teflon shoe onto my current iron until I am ready to dismiss it. I like my current iron (name - in another room) so haven't felt the need for the iron shoe. I use a lot of different ironing cloths, including a teflon sheet originally purchased for use when using web stuff. The different cloths seems to work out well. I tend to buy relatively cheap irons and replace them when they start to spit, about once every year or two. I have had expensive irons that haven't lasted any longer than the cheap ones. Regarding the iron shoe. When I first put it onto my iron it was easy, but do think I could ever get it to fit it the same way twice :o ?

BTW, I really don't like ironing and my clothing ironing tends to build up, but I can't live without one when sewing or quilting. When I was working I had a colleague who had 3 nearly adult daughters. They all were always beautifully dressed. She told me that the iron she received as a wedding/shower present was still in the original box as she never used it. She took everything, absolutely everything, to a dry-cleaners. I bet it has been 20 years since I took something to a dry cleaner! To each their own. I figure all the irons I have had have more than paid for themselves.

I have the Iron Glide and I don't think I ever used it. Don't know where it is right now...probably at the bottom of a drawer somewhere. I know I had a teflon iron for about 4 years and loved it. But after it finally quit on me (when dropped) I bought one without the teflon (by mistake) and since I usually only press cottons, it's great. It is heavier than my old small teflon and now that I'm using it, I think the extra weight of the iron makes a difference in the pressing. JMO!

I found the same thing. My iron died last week, and when I removed the iron shoe, I also noticed discoloration of my iron. I didn't hesitate to put the iron shoe on my new iron, though, because I iron all my regular clothes (that is, I used the iron shoe for more than just pressing while sewing) with the shoe.
