1890 working class womans Sunday outfit

I need to dress this way for church on Sept 27th and need pictures, patterns, suggestions. Not much time. Our church wa established in 1890 and we are celebrating the anniversary with a dressup day. I'd love to show off my creativity with a hat and Dress. I just realized that I could go to Gander Mountain and probably get a stuffed partridge or bird of some sort to decorate a hat. I read that whole birds were common in that day on hats.

Hi sewingmom, try this website as it will give daytime attire for the 1890's woman. http://www.vintagevictorian.com/costume_1890d_det.html I have a photo of my DH's maternal grandparents taken when they were in college around 1892. His grandmother was wearing a simple boater type hat with streamers, a full skirt with bustle, Gibson blouse & fitted jacket. It was green with dark braided trim. Hope this helps.

Think "Little House on the Prarie" as it was set around that time frame. The later years anyway. Either around the time that Laura was a teacher, or when she got married was right around 1890.

I am so excited, I was able to borrow an old fashioned 2 piece dress, high heeled lace up boots and hat from an acquaintence that does western shootout re-enactments. They are not true to the time frame but close enough. I would like to make and sell costumes to her group of re-enactors. Perhaps the suggestions you ladies have made will help me get started. My friend wants me to let out a skirt for her. Thats a foot in the door.

Sounds like fun! I really enjoy sewing for people. It's always something different. How fun to dress up and as much fun as it would have been to sew your own it's way cheaper and easier to borrow.

Hopefully there is enough fabric in the seams to let out?!? Not to be a party pooper here, but it is so much harder to ADD to the pieces than it is to take away.
