Lucky magazine - A Month of Outfits

I thought this was pretty neat: A Month of Outfits

It's sort of a laid-back capsule concept. I don't love all of the pieces or combinations - they seem to be more geared toward a rectangle-type figure (straight up and down, which their models may be) than an hourglass like me, but I think the basic looks could work on a variety of figures.

What do you guys think of the harem pants? I don't think they're for me..but.. :)

A few of my favorite outfits:
Day 6 - tank and maxi-skirt - I was already thinking about making a long skirt for this summer, now I guess I will be "in style" :)
Day 7 - button down shirt over fitted sheath dress
Day 12 - not super sure about the frilly vest/top, but maybe a toned-down version would work for me
Day 21 - colorful tank and tweedy pencil skirt - I definitely need this outfit! I was eying a tweedy suiting fabric last time I was at Joann's to knock off this Ann Taylor skirt: tweed pencil skirt
Day 24 - fitted sheath dress with striped cardigan

What do you think - see anything you like? Anything you hate? I know Lucky has kind of an odd aesthetic - kind of overly layered at times, like you put on everything in your closet at once. But they seem to have some fresh and wearable ideas.

Interesting but way too youthful for my taste. I can see the outfits on my 20 yr old DD but not on my 56 yr old body.

I liked the style. It was the kind of stuff I could wear when I worked in the newsroom.
I would add more color though.

Marty and Karen, fair enough, but you've gotta have an opinion on the harem pants..? :) I do think, though, that some of the looks are classic (not the harem pants..) - like the dress with the button down shirt worn as an overblouse. I think a variation of that could be comfortably worn at any age.

I think I agree with you, Dorothy, but I do like the way they have used neutrals. Neutrals seem a bit boring when I'm planning my sewing projects, but if I don't have enough of them I sort of paint myself into a corner wardrobe-wise. Some more neutral skirts and pants will be slowly finding their way into my closet soon, I think. :)

I liked all of the one's you like except the maxi skirt, and I don't like the top with the pencil skirt. I didn't see the harem pants.

One thing that distracted me was how emaciated the model appears. That skinny does not seem to be even remotely beautiful to me.

I liked a lot of those very much. The casualness appeals to me and contrary to Marty and Karen I think several are just fine for any age. I would put 5,7,8,9,10,19,24 in that catagory. I think 24 is my favorite but it's just the sheath with a bolero type jacket. I agree with Dorothy in that I'd use more color but only because I'm a winter and jewel tones suit me best along with white and black. Most of those shoes were pretty hideous though. Don't like that "gladiator" style at all. Not flattering to any shape of legs.

I think what they call the "pleated pants" are what Kaitlin's referring to as harem pants. Also, did you notice that 23 is just the maxi skirt pulled up with a belt?

I'm also going back in time saying that there is something very reminiscent of Annie Hall/Diane Keaton here, isn't there?

I agree with Lennie. I think several of the outfits could be worn by anyone. It also gives you some interesting ideas to work with. As to the harem pants, when ever I see them I think of MC Hammer .

hahahahah MC HAMMER!!!!

sorry - I think a lot of those could be useful - but why wear a dress under a skirt? at least that was my reading of day 6

It seems more wearable than the Burda magazine type collection that you get but I do wonder how they will fit on 'real' women as opposed to very boyish figures.

Yes, those pleated pants with the slightly dropped crotch..I think those qualify as harem pants. I guess they are coming back. I've seen several patterns for them recently. Not for me, but on a more boyish figure I think they can look nice. I like the scaled down versions better - the really full ones do seem to summon MC Hammer for me too! (Can't touch this..! )

Hah - good point Jan. I didn't even notice that. I did notice one of the other ones was a jacket, over a T-shirt, over a dress! Layering is all well and good, I guess, but when it comes to tucking a dress into a skirt..no thanks. I would probably spend 30 minutes in the morning just trying to get it to lay right.

I don't think this model is particularly emaciated - thin to be sure, and definitely a rectangle or boyish figure type, but I think she has a pretty typical build for a model. It would certainly be nice to see clothes on an "average" figure, or maybe on a variety of shapes. I would definitely alter the shape/fit of some of the garments if I wanted to design a wardrobe like this for me - very loose-fitting tops with no shaping don't really work well for me.
