Not-quite-2-hour top: New Look 6179

For those of you following the "help me decide" thread here: Which top? - this one was #1. #2 won for votes, but this one won for ease of construction and fabric availability - I found crinkle cotton at Hancock fabrics, but no appropriate knits for the other 2 patterns. Here come the pictures:

The shirt is extra wrinkly because I twisted it up after wearing it for a while on Sunday in hopes of restoring some of the crinkliness since it was a little stretched out after sewing and wearing. Well, I just got wrinkles on top of crinkles, which isn't the best look. Oh well. Maybe I'll get a better picture after washing it. Now, this is not the most figure-flattering top, but it sure is comfy and easy to make. I didn't make my 2 hour start to finish "deadline," but I sure came close - it took about 3 hours in the end. I bet if I made another I would make 2 hours no problem, and it's definitely less than 2 hours of actual sewing time.

I pretty much made the pattern as-is - I did go a size smaller than I usually use because this top has a large amount of ease. It is especially loose in the back. I added 1" to the neckline edge of each of the pattern pieces to make a casing for the drawstring, rather than using bias tape to do the casing.

Kaitlinn its a winner!!!!! Would you think it would look good with a sleeve about 3" longer. I have fat arms. How would it look if I just add the three inches to the bottom of the sleeve or would I need to alter the shape any???

Kaitlinn, it looks great! I had wondered about doing the same thing with adding an inch on the neck instead of using bias tape, but I chickened out. Next time I'll definately do it!

Makes me want to cut one out and get to work...I looked for that pattern and couldn't find it. I even looked in the New Look book, but I did find a similar one.

Yours looks great! I especially like the added drawstring...I think the pattern I found has one...if not, I'll use your idea. I bought cotton gauze a couple weeks ago that would work nicely.

Cute top Kaitlin. You're young enough to get away wearing something like that. However, on this 55+ year old body of mine, it would not look good. It's a nice casual look for summer.

Thanks everyone! I forgot to link to the pattern in my first post - here it is: New Look 6179. It is an older pattern, I think (the photo looks kind of 90's), so it might be going out of print soon. If you can't find it locally, you could probably order it online..but, I have looked at every peasant top pattern known to man, and they are all basically the same. I picked 6179 because of the sleeve variations - particularly I'd like to make the long flounced sleeve at some point, but variations would not be hard to do yourself. Here are some of them that I found:

New Look 6809 - slightly different neckline and sleeve variations
Simplicity 4177 - I think this is the one Theresa used?
Simplicity 3732 - an "It's So Easy" pattern
McCall 5050 - with elastic at the empire waistline
Butterick 4685 - yet another.

Now, that is for sure. Monday I spent 4 hours shopping and only came away with about half the things I was looking for. I'd much rather have been sewing!

I think it would probably work out just fine. I don't think the shape would need to be altered, really, but you might like it better with a little more or less poof, or you might just want to hem it rather than doing the elastic - in that case, you might want to try shortening one of the long sleeve pieces rather than lengthening the short sleeve one.

Great job! You might want to look at New Look 6761. It is a really simple top with a couple of sleeve options.
