DD's Hobo Bag

New postby Bama on Mon Sep 05, 2011 8:15 pm

DD made this today as a project for her speech class. The assignment is to bring in a bag filled with things that describe your personality and to talk about them to the class. An example the professor gave was someone who likes sports might bring in an athletic bag filled with sports equipment. Of course DD thought her bag should also describe her personality, so she wanted to make one. I made the pattern for her when she couldn't find a pattern in my supply for a bag that was large enough. She picked the fabric from my stash (I should say OUR stash now I suppose), did the applique and most of the sewing, until she got frustrated with the straps. I finished that part.
You can't tell from the picture, but the bag is quite large. It falls below her hip and will also hold her laptop.
This is the 3rd or 4th project she has appliqued a tree on. She's still choosing the things she wants to put inside the bag, but took some sewing supplies and two of her favorite books. :D After she left I realized I should have given a fat quarter bundle to throw in it, since she seems to love fabric more these days.

Bama she did a great job!
My DD's both had to fill out a questionaire for their professors.(each had a different professor0 they both work at our local hands on science museum. One question was tell me something interesting about yourself so I can identify you in class. Older DD wrote I sometimes wear a "splat" on my chest (museum logo) other DD wrote I spend a lot of time making slime (she teaches the slime workshop) They thought it was interesting the both wrote about their jobs

Please tell her I love it, Lori. The colors, the design, the tree (in particular) are perfect. My dd and I would love it anytime, anywhere. I like the project the teacher assigned. Put some thought into who you are.............. I loved speech class.

That is really beautiful! Did she just come up with the idea for the applique?

That's a great bag. It's nice to have a daughter that shares your passion, isn't it?

It is nice, but there were several years between loving sewing (around age 6-12), then not wanting anything to do with it (12 1/2 to 18), then back to wanting to learn more from mom. ;) If she could just get the hang of crocheting and knitting. She wants to learn when she sees a project or yarn she likes, but gives up too easily.

That is so pretty! She could make some extra $$ making those and selling them to friends.
