Fixing a square neckline

New postby bridesmom on Wed Aug 08, 2012 3:56 pm

I made 3 tops for DGD and of course they are huge across her chest. All 3 need to be taken in a good inch to 1.5inches across the neck and as you can see this is a square neckline. How the heck do I do this?? I thought maybe I could just put in an elastic but that doesn't work.

Hey Laura. My first thought would be to remove the top from the gathering and make two little vertical pleats on each side, front and back - one in each direction. You could put a little ribbon bow or button between. Then reattach after removing some fabric (if needed) from the gathered part.

I'm thinking that you could make 3 small tucks down the center front & each side to draw up the fabric. Add a little embroidery design to make it one of a kind dress.

I am thinking I would just fill in the neckline with a co-ordinating strip of fabric stitched inside the neckline and perhaps mitereing at the corners of the square neck. You could even put tucks along the front edge of the strip to make it a design feature. Or piping between the strip and the original neckline. How is the width of the bodice at the underarm level. If that isn't a problem, I dont think I would rip out and take in the width. JMHO. I know you will be creative with this and wow us all.
