I'm applying the facing now. Still have not trimmed the zipper. Crossing my fingers that this all comes together correctly.

Some days I really wonder about myself. I totally missed the twill tape on the supply list. Right there plain as day on the back of the envelope. I already used up my selvages tying up my tomato plants. Guess I am gonna dig through my grosgrain ribbon to see if I have any that I find ugly enough to hide inside his shorts.

Finished adding the facing and he tried them on. They are 2 inches to big in the waist! The pattern back says Boy's Large - Waist 23-23 1/2. His waist is 23. They literally fall down til they hit is bum and he can just wiggle a bit and they go to the floor. ARRRRRGGGHHHH! I am afraid to sew the shirt now. But it seems that most of you didn't have these headaches so maybe I will get lucky.

You've had your share of bad luck this week, poor Gina. It can only get better now, right?

The shirt I made was a Small and the mom said it fit just like a size 6 if that helps you at all. Other than that I know nothing of kid's sizes. The collar was a bit tricky to understand (as so often happens) but really quite easy if you look closely. Good luck.

I always check the finished garment measurements as sometimes there is as much as 6 inches of ease especially in Simplicity patterns.

I do too and always am getting the person to try it on to recheck the fit. Unless it's something for the grands, and I can get away with it being big, they still can grow into it. But it is so frustrating to get that far and have it not fit!

Gina, For Kids pants/shorts. I just run some elastic through the waistband to take up the excess.

Re: Simplicity 5581 - Need a little help, please.

OK, I need a little bit of help. I'm making the shirt, kids large. I'm up to step 11. I have almost completely finished with the collar. I turned my facing to the inside and pressed. This is my next step:
Stitch pressed edge of collar over neck seam.

OK, I know what they want me to do. Do I edge stitch, about 1/4 inch from the edge, or do I have a wider seam allowance? I'm guessing it is not a regular 5/8 seam allowance, but I keep turning it over and back again until I'm getting dizzy. What should it be? I'm guessing it is just edgestitched, and only between the dots. Is that correct?

I'm pretty excited about how well this is going together. I started sewing it yesterday, and I've been working in little spurts. One thing that has really helped is that I marked everything to begin with, and I hung up my actual pattern so I could verify where the marks are, as after a few layers, those dots seem to be hard to find.

Yes, that's correct - what you're thinking, Theresa, although you may have done it that way already. I thought that was the only tricky part of the shirt pattern.

Thanks, Lennie. I just let it sit, as I didn't want to mess it up, it had been going so well! I'll get back to it in a little bit. Just finished dinner , and need to make a grocery run before I can get back to sewing. I hope this is a keeper for dd, as I really like it!
