Modest Princess Lolly Dress

New postby Pudge99 on Mon Mar 07, 2011 9:21 am

So the theme this year is Candyland. My daughter wants to be Princess Lolly, only a bit more modest. So after a lot of thinking and talking she chose this dress pattern. We will probably do short or no sleeves depending on the pattern and fabric chosen. That is where I am stuck. I need fabric ideas. She wants yellow and obviously she wants it "fancy" since it is prom. Any ideas?

I'd go for the netting over a chiffon or light satin dress, if you could find netting with sparkles in it that'd work. Course now that I've looked at the pattern, the netting wouldn't work.
I'm guessing since this is for prom she isn't wanting the lolly pops on the dress and with that many pieces to the skirt that you are going to need something that flows, like a light stretch satin? A chiffon would work, but you'd have to do a lining under the chiffon. What about beading yellow lollypop designs or circles across the bottom? It looks like a fun project to do!!

I'm still stumped on the fabric. I was hoping to be able to order something online so that I could avoid driving to Omaha. But I really think I need to feel the fabric. UUGH! I need a motorcycle with saddle bags so I can afford to drive to Omaha for fabric.

Some online places will send you a swatch to fondle. I think it costs money but not as much as gas and they might discount the price of the swatch if you buy the fabric.

I found Charmeuse Satin, says it is good for bias, and lightweight, but I wonder if it needs lining.

Gina, I don't know if you've ever seen this site, Gorgeous Fabrics. I did buy some fabric from here a couple of years ago and it was really nice. I know it is expensive. But here is their sale link which does have some fancy fabrics like satins near the end...wools are on top. Maybe this would give you some ideas or options. You may find their sale prices still expensive...$6 and up/yd. But looking doesn't cost anything. ;) HTHs

I've ordered from fabric.com and been very pleased with the quality and the prices. They will do swatches--I did it for some curtain fabric.
Can't wait to see what you come up with!

OK so I ordered swatches from Fabric.com and neither of the yellows they had were good. Today I drove to Hancock in Omaha and bought a stretch satin. I also got a sparkling sheer fabric that I thought looked nice over it. I will do a test before I actually do the dress to see how flowing it is with both fabrics.

Gina, If you have a large doll in the house somewhere you could make up the dress in the doll size to test out the fabric drape and such and then make the honest to goodness life size dress. You could then make any changes that might need to be made.

Dress is done, prom is underway. I'm one tired Mama. I put pictures up on Facebook. I'll put some up here with the story if things settle down next week.
