Need help with hem feature

New postby temom on Tue Apr 19, 2011 7:21 pm

I took my favorite old worn out capri pants and used them as a pattern. I'm having trouble with the hem feature. Just how do you do this? My pic is sideways, but it is the hem.

It's done with a facing. You stitch the side seam first, the facing is put on and the slit is an inverted v. I am not explaining this well at all. I have a pattern for this, I will see if I can find it and copy out the directions for you.

For a slit on the side of the pants, you can also leave a little larger seam allowance & fold under & top stitch when hemming. Much easier than a facing in my opinion.

I did some shorts with a vented hem like this, and a top too. They were done with the increased hem allowance. Here's one tutorial, but you might be able to find a better one - I just googled "sewing vented hem."

Thank you Kaitlin! I couldn't even google it 'cause I didn't know what it was called!
I'm happy now! :D

Yay Kaitlyn, I was having a hard time remembering to find the pattern. My brain seems to be on short circuit lately.
