oh! clear elastic deteriorates when stored.

New postby sewingmom on Wed May 09, 2012 1:03 pm

:o I was tidying the sewing room a bit and looking for clear sewing thread and clear elastic and to my surprise. When I found the elastic, I tugged on it and it broke very easily. The little bin I had it in wasn't air tight andprobably not of acid free composition but I did not expect the elastic to be ruined. How does anyone else store their opened packages of clear elastic or clear elastic thread?

I keep mine in a freezer ziplock bag tightly sealed with all excess air removed.

I must go through mine fast enough that it doesn't deteriorate, but I did have some from MIL which when stretched went all gummy and sticky and was a horrible mess. That stuff was at least 20 years old. My clear elastic is on a roll on my thread rack with no covering at all. It's still good, it's about 4 years old now.

I guess I go through mine fast enough too. But I really don't go through it that fast. I just wad it up and throw it in the drawer with all the other wadded up stuff.

Well, the first package I ever bought popped as soon as I tried to stretch it. For a long time I refusted to buy any more. Then a friend told me they improved it so that it would last longer, so I did use it in a kid's bathing suit once, but I sure don't want anything in a garment of mine that will not last for years and years.. I have never found a problem with any other elastic product except the clear.
