Question about making Oven Mitts

New postby Debby215 on Sun May 24, 2009 9:58 am

Hello all, I had bought Insul Bright last year and I wanted to make Oven Mitts to sell at a craft show. I KNOW that the shinier side should face out, that much I am sure about. I would like them to be reversible, able to use for either hand, so I would use 2 pcs of Insul bright, shiny side facing out on both, but would you recommend lining the gloves with a muslin or something? I sure hope this makes sense, any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

Debby, use Insul-Brite on both sides with the shiny side facing in & use cotton batting to layer in between lest you have a burned hand. It's important to use cotton batting as polyester doesn't work. Here's how our ASG group did pot holders - fashion fabric, cotton batting, & Insul-brite on each side. If you have the shiny side facing outward, the heat will be absorbed on the hands not away from the hands. Hope this helps.

Marty, it sort of helped, but not completely. IF i am making an oven mitt to put your hand into, do you suggest lining the mitt with a muslin or cotton fabric, Thanks again!

Debby, when you say reversible you mean that the mitt can be switched from one hand to the other...right? You don't mean that you want to be able to turn it inside out to reverse it...do you?

If it is just to switch from one hand to the other, I think the fabric should be layered as follows...the outside fabric, the Insul Brite with the shiny side towards the outside of the mitt, another layer of cotton batting to provide extra protection for your hand, and then either cotton fabric or muslin for the inside of the mitt. At least that is what I think I would do. I read that the shiny side is to be pointing to the hot/cold source...at least that is what it says here...http://www.nancysnotions.com/product/fabric/specialty/insul+bright.do (check the bottom of the list in the Overview box)
