hopefully someone can help me. I am making bridesmaid dresses with my new machine and I need to zig zag the edges so they don't fray. I pick stitch number 8 (the zig zag stitch) but when I go to sew it it just sews strait. This is an electronic machine which is a new thing for me...so I have no idea how to fix it. Please help.

Michelle, according to your users manual, you need to use the overlock stitch for a flat seam finish. I downloaded a free copy of the workbook for the Quantum 9940 & on page 38 are the instructions. You need to use stitch #13 & the overedge foot. Here is the link to download the workbook for your machine. By the way, your machine is computerized. Hope this helps.

Have you changed the stitch width? Usually there is a separate knob for that.

You would also have to do that if you use the overlock stitch Marty recommends.
