This is just a guess but when you attach the foot to the machine, where does your needle line up. On the left side of the toe??? That would be my assumption and then you sew with the edge of your quilt block aligning with the right side of the toe cause the toe is probably a 1/4 inch wide. But I've gotta admit, I can't see a use for that guide...

BTW: thought I'd do some googling...and look what I found...a site that has videos of the feet. They don't have anything about the guide but they mention about the markings on the quarter inch foot to help you pivot...cool. And take a look at the PDF file for the quarter inch...it explains how to use it.

The needle comes down right between the toes.

The guide is so that you can make evenly spaced sewing lines. Usually used when you are sewing/quilting something where you cannot see the lines on the plate or when you need something larger than a 5/8" seam allowance. (channel quilting comes to mind here) You generally sew your first line, and then use that line on your sewing project to line up the rest using the guide. I have one that fits on both my treadle and my hand crank singers, so they have been around for a while.

That's exactly what it is,a foot to do channel sewing on a quilt....Draw the 1st line and depending how far apart you want the next line put the long stick part on the line and presto another straight line, just about all sewing machines have them....

I used mine a lot back several years ago when I made a ton of evening clutches to sell. I bought lame on sale and would quilt squares or diamonds on the fabric using that quilting guide and then fold the finished rectangle up from the bottom and sitich the side seams, attach velcro for a closure, and sew a pretty button on the outside of the top flap and I had a finished evening bag..

Oh my, I think you will have to make one of those - oh what did Dorothy call it, not a quilt, but a fabric sandwich to see how it works.... but be careful, it's a slippery slope down to the dark side!!
