Computer Died Again

New postby MartySews2 on Sun Mar 10, 2013 11:01 pm

Tonight as I was getting ready to transfer an embroidery design to my USB drive, my computer screen went black and will not come on. The power cord is working and I tried different plugs on my serge protector. I took out the battery 3 different times and put it back in but no luck. It's back to Best Buy again. Am quite frustrated as my laptop is less than 2 yrs old. Using hubby's laptop now. Hopefully, it is an easy fix. I have the worst luck with computers.

That's too bad, Marty. Always happens at the most inconvenient of times, doesn't it? Hopefully it is still under warranty, and if not, at least computers are cheap now! I paid $7500 for my IBM XT for my business back in 1983--and that didn't even include the monitor! That would be $17,000 in today's dollars. That set the baseline for computer prices for me. So thirty years later, I don't feel bad spending a thousand dollars every few years for a new computer when I need one! I just figure that computers cost me $1 a day now and accept it as another item that wears out. Sort of like how I buy a new mattress every eight or ten years to keep my back happy.

Miss Fleecy, when my daughter came in, she looked it over, removed the battery and dusted the area and then put back in the battery. She said that there was a lot of dust in the area. It is working fine now. I was able to download my embroidery designs so I should be ready to get these dresses made tomorrow or at least by Wednesday. I hate it when she shows me up because I thought I had done all of the troubleshooting. :brick: :brick: :brick:

Sounds like when you get your embroidery machine cleaned it is also time to get your laptop cleaned!

Wow, that was a low cost fix! Happy for you there. Miss Fleecy, I had to look at the inflation calculator as I was taken aback by the 7.5K vs 17K now and the one I used is a tad higher!! When I plugged in what I bought my first house for in 1977, then sold at a good profit in 1999, adjusting for inflation, it was awash. *sigh*

The first lesson I learned when the bank put me in a department that used computers, was Dust is a NO NO!!! the next no no is heat. DS did not want to listen when I told him that we could not set a computer on the floor because of the dust hazard. It sits in a little wheeled cart about 4 inches off the floor. A while later DS told me one day that the computer fan was making noise. I asked when he had dusted it last and he hung his head. We turned it off and dusted the area around the cart and I held the computer up and he dustred it and the cart. When we turned it back on the noise was gone, of course. Computers and all its accessories should be dust free at all times to operate properly.

Libby, if you open the tower it might look like a small kitten was napping in there. DD was some surprized to see the collection and we keep ours off the floor and have no pets. Clean under the refridgerator too after taking the grille off!

After he used the air can on it, he opened the tower and it was clean. I learned about the refrig. years ago when the first ones to have coils on the bottom were first introduced. You ladies on here forget that I remember When ! !! LOL. I remember when the ice man came every day and we had to put the sign in the window as to what size block of ice we wanted that day to put in our icebox. The kind with no cord to plug in, you know. I was only 3 or 4 years old, bur I remember it well.First Electric refrigerator we had had legs on it and the coils were on the back or the top. (we have had both, so whick came first is fuzzy in my mind)
